It must just be a matter of what you're accustomed to, because having used lmms for a grand total of 1 project over the course of 2-3 weeks (and ableton never), I think lmms has the less cluttered or busy interface. The MDI method might make it possible to overwhelm yourself with little windows, and I'd like to have the option to use my system's default colors and UI theme, but it looks like I would have some of the same complaints about ableton. That said, I think the changes from 0.3 (which was what my distro had available when I first tried it) to 0.4 (which I upgraded to Ubuntu Jaunty just to be able to build) have made it markedly more usable, and I look forward to watching it continue to improve.
