Exactly how "Mute myself" works?

    Hi

    I'm on 3.5.3

My contribution to the debate about what "Mute Myself" is supposed to do.

My concerns are the same as so many: From Github #187 we want a feature that will remove any risk of accidentally allowing noise from our connection to intrude on other users on the server. I'm assuming maybe incorrectly that being of limited knowledge I should not post directly on github.

One specific concern of mine is this question, relevant to using sound card rather than audio interface. I am learning how to use my Zoom R16 as audio interface in the meantime:

Is it feasible that by connectiong to server I could be putting static or interference noise on the line even with "mute myself" on? Even if my mic is physically switched off? Or unplugged?

My concern is based on the following:

I have noticed that when Qtjackctl is set to use the sound card there are some circumstances where there is a lot of static interference from the PC as per the following table. The variables being :

Whether or not the mic is plugged in at the front socket. (Not whether it is switched on)

    Interference type:

Static interference from sound card including a fuzzy click every second, from desktop clock, (verified by turning off clock seconds display) and a buzz whenever mouse cursor is moving around screen

Variable: Usually quiet, only audible at hi amp levels, or loud, audible at low-normal amp levels

    Results:

    Qjackctl on but not jamulus

Interference but always quiet, not affected by plugging mic

Jack and jamulus on but not connected to a server

    As above

    Jamulus connected to server:

    Mic connected and switched on:

    No interference from PC

    Mic switched off:

    No interference

    Mic unplugged from socket:

Loud PC interference, from mouse moving cursor over screen and fuzzy click every second from clock.

"Mute myself" made no difference to the results of when Jamulus connected to server

It is early days and I haven't yet got enough friendly contacts from the jamulus servers to take time do live tests with other users

    Many thanks

If you unplug your mic from the socket but your system is configured to 'listen' to that socket, it's normal to get lots of noise. It's like when you unplug the cable from your guitar while it's connected to a PC or amp at the other end - it's starts picking up interference from all over the place.

My understanding is that if you check 'Mute Myself', you can still hear your own audio locally, but it doesn't get sent to the server; i.e. you still hear your own music/noise, but others can't.
