I was running Jamulus OS from a USB stick and now the JamulusOS-dev package v1.07 installed on Ubuntu MATE 20.04.1. The Jamulus client runs great and I believe we finally have a solution to share with our musicians friends.

I've noted the Jamulus server is running by default at boot and not sure why.
I've stopped the the server ($ systemctl stop jamulus) and the client still works OK. Is their any requirement for the server to be running in the background when the pc will only be used as a client?

Running the server in the background does not have an impact on my PC but I know some musicians will attempt to run this on low end equipment and I'm trying to minimse the footprint before assiting non technical friends.

PS: Many thanks for this great software !!!

      Hi Phil,

There is no requirement for the server to be running in the background when the pc will only be used as a client. Perhaps the the autostart is some feature of JamulusOS-dev package? I'm not familiar with that though.

Is there a reason why you're not just running Jamulus OS if you want a USB stick distibuton?

    Gilgongo!,

Thanks for the confirmation that the server is not required. Whilst theJamulus OS works fine the preference is to use Ubuntu MATE as the environment is more familiar than Ubuntu Studio.

(Your use of the exclamation mark after my name is interesting - does that mean you have read Kurt Vonnegut?)

I see. It's probabably a good idea not to have the server start up at boot when you don't need it, if only to reduce any uncessary load. I have no idea why MATE would be running a Jamulus server at boot though (I assume you can see a process running Jamulus -s in the process table).

If it's running it via systemd then you can try sudo systemctl disable jamulus (maybe try Jamulus, or jamulus.service if that name isn't recognised) and see if that stops it from running at boot I suppose. Otherwise, maybe there's something else doing it?

        Hi Gilgongo,
The exclamation was the result of a dodgy keyboard and typing late at night :-) I'm vaguely familar with Kurt Vonnegut through his book Slaughterhouse Five.

I've disabled the server using systemctl disable jamulus and everything is good. Many thanks.
