Hi,
Sorry for this basic question (and please point me in the direction if this has already been answered), but what is the most basic, minimal setup I can have to effectively run Jamulus? I am on a macbook air, and my main aim is to use my midi keyboard, which is connected via USB, and also has external speakers.
The software is working fine, but when I use computer mic as input and my computer speakers as output, I get crazy feedback. When I plug headphones in, I can hear fine, but the mic only picks up the clacking of the keys. So,
1) Is there a way to set this all up using computer mic as input/speakers as output without generating feedback?
2) Is there a way I can just use the midi as input and speakers as output?
Thanks in advance!

I'm in the situation of finding a proper setup myself and use a similar setup as you (MacBook Air/ Midi (in my case drums) over USB.
There are two approaches since Jamulus expects a proper audio signal:
1: Use the built in sounds of your keyboard. Connect the Line-Out? of your keyboard to your computer (e.g. via an audio-interface) and select this as input in Jamulus
2: Send Midi signals from your keyboard over USB to an Virtual Instrument (VST) running on your Computer / Digital Audio Workstation. Install blackhole which is a virtual Sound Routing tool (The successor of Soundflower) an select blackhole as output of your VST /DAW. In Jamulus select blackhole as input.
In my case my Drum module sends Midi over USB to Superior Drummer 3 and the output of SD3 is sent to blackhole. In Jamulus I set blackhole as input and my Drum-module as output. As a result, I'm able to hear my drumming coming from the Jamulus Server on my headphones.
I'm still trying to add a mic into the mix to talk to my mates without adding additional latency...
Keep in mind that you need to be connected to a Jamulus Server to see the signal strength in your Jamulus client.
Hope I could help

yes, garageband would be your DAW and sure you can use it. Now you want to feed the sound of garageband into Jamulus and thats where blackhole comes in because it enables you to do just that.
I have pretty much a comparable setup:
Ronald TD11 <midi> Focusrite Scarlett <usb> Mac w SD3
Output in SD3 is Blackhole, in Jamulus in:Blackhole/out: Scarlett</usb></midi>
Now I have the same issue you describe "I'm still trying to add a mic into the mix to talk to my mates without adding additional latency..."; I have a Mic connected to the audio interface (Scarlett), can hear me speak, but Jamulus doesn't pick up the signal (so other will not hear me.
Did you have any success in your setup regarding the Mic connection?
I'm still waiting for my new audio interface to arrive but what I did in the meantime was installing Ladiocast from the appstore and using the built in microphone / the mic from old earpods and if i'm not talking disabling the routing of the mic to blackhole (Main button)
Downside: I hear myself speaking in the headphones. Next I want to try a more advanced routing with Ladiocast hoping that's not adding latency, else I'm okay with my currenty routing.

Hi
I meanwhile moved to jamkazam - setup was straightforward with my Superior Drummer plugin and Mic configured without any issues. Sound seems to be really good from wht people telling me. However latency issues just as with jamulus - which certainly is not an issue of any online jamming software. What I specifically like about jamkazam is that you can jam to jamtracks.

Hey, thanks for the reply!
In terms of #2, would I be able to use garageband? Or do I specifically need blackhole, and to follow the rest of the steps you laid out?
Matt
Hi Matt,
yes, garageband would be your DAW and sure you can use it. Now you want to feed the sound of garageband into Jamulus and thats where blackhole comes in because it enables you to do just that.
Download the latest release here: https://github.com/ExistentialAudio/BlackHole/releases and install it. After installation you can select it in garageband as output:
In Jamulus select it as Input:

PS: maybe of interest, I compile my server installation here: https://bernhard.hensler.net/jamulus/
