Where have all the serial ports gone?

I've been looking at purchasing a new motherboard
for a MythTV video recorder.  I've noticed that
several of the newer motherboards do NOT have
serial ports.  I've heard this is an increasing
trend.

What other options are there to connect an IR receiver
to a computer to use with Lirc?  I've got it working
with my Hauppauge WinTV board,  but the TV remote
is VERY limited.
