A simplification is that both IR *transmission* through lircd and *output* commands to the B&B 232SDD16 RxD line can be done at the same time, without killing either the lirc(d) or the serial module/driver. For this purpose (if I remember well), the serial module has to be installed first. Unfortunately, lirc and serial do not coexist peacefully when they have to handle *receiving* or *input* (TxD) data (because of obvious IRQ conflicts), and then you need to keep killing one or the other module/driver, depending on the situation...
