xmode2 and signal integrity/repeatability

Hi :) Should the output of any given key on a remote control (and
thus the display in xmode2) be identically the same every time?

Or maybe I'm asking, is it common that there will be variation, one
that perhaps has a majority winner?

And since I do seem to be seeing differences, how can I be sure
that the signals being recorded are the correct ones?  (I'm recording
them now but won't be able to test playback until months later when
I no longer have access to the original remote.)

I'm using Linux 2.6.37.1 (which backs /dev/lirc0 with the new ENE
CIR driver from Martin) on Ubuntu 10.10 with lirc git HEAD.

By the way, xmode2 rocks! Totally beats diffing text files for quick
visualization.
