Modifying Driver to work with LIRC

I have a driver that will convert a stream of pulses into RC5 binary data.
Is there any way to modify this driver so that it can be interfaced w/ the
LIRC project? I can send it the raw bits before for I convert them under RC5
and basically still relay anything I need to do. Would this be a plug into
to the default version? I couldn't find much documentation on how you would
do this.
