Using different remotes with an IR receiver

Hi there,

I'm not sure whether what I'm attempting is stupid or should be 
possible.  So would appreciate some advice.   I have a Silverstone LC14M 
case with a built-in IR receiver, for use with the bundled imon pad 
remote.   I don't particularly like the remote and would like to use 
something else.  But I'd like to use the IR receiver built into the case.

I borrowed an MCE remote, but I can't lircd to work when using the 
correct lircd.conf file for the remote (i.e. no output from irw).  If I 
use the receiver that comes with the MCE remote it works fine.

And when I use mode2 and compare the output of the same remote on the 
different receivers they look the same/similar.  So I'm not sure why the 
remote codes don't appear in irw.

I've also tried using irrecord to learn the codes for other remotes 
(like old DVD/VCR remotes) .... but the result never works.  The 
lircd.conf file created, has duplicate codes for different buttons.... 
so obviously didn't detect things correctly.  Maybe this is an 
indication that imon IR receiver isn't doing the right thing???

So it seems that you need to use the IR receiver that was designed for 
the particular remote.  Is that correct?  Is there anything I can do to 
make other remotes usable with my built-in IR receiver.
