Can > anyone tell me where I'm going wrong? Following the documentation on http://www.lirc.org/html/install.html#testing , you should first test the remote with mode2. After that is confirmed to work, copy the configuration file for your remote (in your case remotes/mceusb/lircd.conf.mceusb under the source tree) to /etc/lircd.conf modprobe lirc_mceusb2 and lirc_dev (if it doesn't autoload), and you should be able to start lircd (make sure you use the -d <device> to point to the correct device node). irw should now work.
