RE: mode2 not working

I couldn't get lirc to work after a recent kernel upgrade on Fedora Core 4.
The modules that I use, lirc_it87 and lirc_dev, were only available to the
old kernel in /lib/modules/OLD_KERNEL/misc and not for the new kernel in
/lib/modules/NEW_KERNEL/misc.

This may not help you, as your lirc modules seem to be creating the correct
/dev files. I had upgraded the kernel to get my nVidia GeForce4 MX 440
graphics card working with nvidia-glx. I since discovered I don't need
nvidia-glx and have gotten the necessary drivers, from nvidia's site, to
work with the older kernel.

Since I upgraded my kernel and hotplug is replaced by udev, lirc stopped 
to work. I have the following devices created by udev:

andrej:~# ls -la /dev/lirc*
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     5 2006-04-08 12:41 /dev/lirc -> lirc0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root root 61, 0 2006-04-08 12:41 /dev/lirc0
srw-rw-rw-  1 root root     0 2006-04-08 10:41 /dev/lircd
prw-r--r--  1 root root     0 2006-04-08 10:41 /dev/lircm

Though, the devices /dev/lirc0 and /dev/lircm show black borders around 
them so I assume they are broken. I am not sure what this meens though.

I added the following lines to my /etc/modules.conf:

alias char-major-61  lirc_serial
options lirc_serial irq=4 io=0x3f8

And I configured and compiled lirc with the right oprions for IRQ and IO.

Now, when I try mode2 and press some buttons on my remote control 
nothing happens.
