You might want to try the lirc-cvs ebuild available in the gentoo.de
overlay, it works fine with 2.6.14.

In case you don't want to install that overlay (docs are in German only,
AFAIK), you can grab that ebuild from
http://www.gentoo.de/viewcvs/app-misc/lirc-cvs/
