I confuse gdm and kdm. gdm don't like my patch :-( And gdm kills X anyway after 10 sec time out. I am so sorry. Aivils |

I tried James' patch with 2.6.14 (really fast!), but still getting crashes after repeated logouts and logins (beween 6 and 10). I also recompiled X with Aivils' patch. After repeated logouts, the machine freezes. I have no clue what causes the freeze. With Aivils' patch, an occasional X server hits 99% cpu usage with an interesting phenomenon: it slows performance on servers :1 and :2, but not on :0. Only :0 is not USB. We also see that each logout takes longer and longer until the machine freezes. Yitzhak |

re: xorg (patched with isolate device) : 6.8.2-37 (FC4 P4)/ 6.7.0-14 (FC2 SMP Athlon), nVidia 8xxx binary driver, 2.6.14-vz3.3xx kernel looks like a majic combination for me so far. re: Zephyr; Not yet - I will probably look at it soon - I have SVHS outputs that I want to take advantage of for PVR and editing use; I am cautious on nested solutions - it strikes me, and I may be wrong, as a high overhead solution, no matter which way you turn. If zephyr is stable and reliable and takes up some of the discussed features, then I'm sure to start using it, but it probably won't be for multi-console use, generally speaking, although does raise the potential for reliable use of multi-head cards where this is not currently feasable. (including SVHS outputs :-) The issues specifically resolved with these vz3.3xx kernel are : any console switching instability - I've tried quite hard and can no longer reproduce it. Even on a machine for which this has historically been a problem. vesafb-tng is better, but not 100% - on SMP and hyperthreaded machines, no problem. On SMP boxes it remains unreliable. I use vesafb-tng console on the HT P4 and vga16 framebuffer console on the SMP server. Neither show any sign of the issue. I haven't tested much with text mode console. On the other hand, you do want to > retain <ctrl><alt><bkspc> to reset the card. Absolutely. As Aivils pointed out - it's an emergency out. What I'm wondering is if there would be any benefit to introduce a forced timeout inserted between <ctrl><alt><bkspc> killing the server and the new X server attempting to init video. Does a single head fail similarly? With multi-console at least, using this as a stress test will cause a crash - either of the X server or a lockup or similar. It is attempting to re-init immediately. How might one insert a pause of say 0.5 or 1 second, to ensure that this is not the whole problem? Is this unnecessary? Of course it's not a real-world usage and it's not normally a problem, but it would be nice to know what causes it and perhaps prevent it altogether. What version of X are you running? Have you or anybody else have positive experience with Zephyr. Aivils' solution of not resetting the hardware on [xkg]dm logout sounds like a sufficient solution to the Nvidia driver errors. We do not(!!) want logout to reset the Nvidia driver, since that's exactly what causes the problems. On the other hand, you do want to retain <ctrl><alt><bkspc> to reset the card. That's what it's intended for, isn't it? Yitzhak |

So for those who's multi-X proves unstable after multiple login-logout, this should stabilise X? But the Ctrl-Alt-backspace test is still likely to fail if the restarting X server fails to remove and reinit the device instance? The paranoid sysops comment is due to the (small) potential for the X server to be compromised and the compromise carried over between login sessions? Is there anything that can be done to reduce the likelyhood of an X server failing to reinit after killed by ctrl-alt-backspace? I don't seem to need this - my nV only configs seem to be stable, but I suspect that odd combinations of drivers, such as an (nV binary + nV opensource + matrox + s3) config might benefit a great deal? This is what killed my multiseat project, and I never found a solution > to it, including disabling DPMS and all other powersavings. Screens > would still go to sleep and never wake up. No such troubles on FC2/FC3/FC4 + faketty; I do remember an issue like it that cropped up on early tests, though, using ruby and much earlier nV binary drivers. RH9/FC1 vintage? Haven't had a problem like that since before 2.6.9, I think. We work with Nvidia boards (which have the reset problem, but that's another issue). DPMS works OK. We found that the problem you report occurs when Option "RenrderAccel" is On. When we turn off RenderAccel, the problem does not occur. Yitzhak Bar Geva |

X authentification reset himself, because reread actual user authentification file on each client connection. Now X leave alone videocard on user logoff. Paranoidal sysops must not use this patch. Hello, I'm writing to announce the latest version of our live multi-user cd.=20 Just pop it in your machine, and if you have enough nvidia video cards, keyboards, mice, and sound cards (USB sound cards work too) you will have a multi-user system up and running in about 5 minutes with no questions asked. For more information and to download the .iso, check out: http://groovix.com/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/KioskDemoDisc and http://groovix.com/kiosk/ This version uses the open source nv driver and works very reliably. Also, we have ubuntu .deb packages available that enable multi-user operation on a normal Ubuntu hard drive install. These should also work with recent versions of Debian, mepis, linspire, etc. but we haven't tried them. To convert your normal Ubuntu install to a "Groovix" install with other recommended packages and enhancements, you can download and run http://groovix.com/ubuntu/breezy_setup.bash and then run /usr/bin/groovix_breezy_customer_install.bash to install non-free software too. see http://groovix.com/ubuntu/ for more details OR, to just install our multi-user packages, Just add these to your sources.list: deb http://archive.groovix.net/ubuntu breezy main multiuser deb http://archive.groovix.net/ubuntu breezy-security main multiuser and then, you will need to install these packages: slim-audio slim-usb slim-video PLEASE NOTE: these packages are still in "beta" mode and are not perfect. In particular, they overwrite key configuration files (after backing them up) and don't reverse the changes on uninstall, so you probably don't want to install them on your golden everyday use install. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, Michael Pardee 1-888-323-1742 Open Sense Solutions LLC http://opensensesolutions.com |

Hi, Mike! About videoadapter reinit on SIGHUP under X I am partialy success, but i have not ready for use patch! It is very simple. When DM sends SIGHUP to X, then function Dispatch() break eternal cycle and return. Dispatch() is called from dix/main.c main() function. X count each restart in the variable serverGeneration. Our task is creation on additional condition checking if(serverGeneration > 1 ) in the main() function. I think , beter is our paralel trying. Seems screenInfo overwriting and InitOutput() must be disabled when serverGeneration > 1. May be only single dix/main.c main() function must be patched and we got stable output over all X sessions. Output initialised on X startup only. Of course on Ctrl-Alt-Backspace X dies anyway. Aivils |

I don't know what percentage of the multi-user systems have dualheads. I don't. I have a TNT2 as AGP and an MX-440 as PCI. Runs great. Put it in and run Fakegetty. Hi, I own a TNT2 PCI VGA card. If I have any other AGP card as the first card, is it possible to run a dualhead linux system? Or all VGA cards needs to be dualhead? Hello, I'm sending two patches for the xserver module. The kdrive-evdev.patch adds support for evdev mouse and keyboard and=20 solves a Caps, Num and Scroll lock problem when the server is compiled=20 with XKB support. The other one, kdrive-ephyr-evdev.patch, adds an option to the ephyr=20 kdrive xserver (-use-evdev) to use the evdev input driver instead of=20 getting events from the underlying X server. It also adds a -geometry=20 option. []'s Ander --=20 Ander Conselvan de Oliveira C3SL - Centro de Computa=E7=E3o Cient=EDfica e Software Livre www.c3sl.ufpr.br |

This includes 127.0.0.1 and any IP addresses the machine may also have like multiple ethernet cards' and/or aliases. I just tried FreeCiv, it allows logging into the same server even from the same login on the same screen, server is on localhost, port 5555. Just give different usernames for the different players. So I figured out how to play and how to start the dedicated server. But how does each multi-seat player connect to it? The setup wants an IP address.
