We just discovered a likely bug in new version 9.87 (aka LAC09p87) during alpha testing of Jan2026. Players that don't have a hardware joystick or hardware console game controller and who are then forced to use mouse and keyboard as primary flight controls may find it impossible to map any keyboard keys to "throttle up" or "throttle down" functions.

It looks like this bug comes from main.cpp's "event_thrustUp()" function which is missing the special logic needed to handle throttle through keyboard keys.

Until this bug is fixed or until a workaround is found and published here, we recommend that users DO NOT USE beta-test version 9.87 unless they have a hardware joystick or hardware console game controller.

Users that must rely on mouse/keyboard flight controls should use the current production version 9.83 instead.

    WORKAROUND FOUND!

With experience we have found an easy workaround that overcomes this bug.

Invoke LAC from a bash console with the "-m" option to designate "mouse" flight controls. The command you want to enter from your keyboard is:

    lac -m

From LAC's prominent "SETUP OPTIONS ->GAME" menu, click the "CONTROLLER" button several times and watch it cycle among the "JOYSTICK", "CONSOLE", and "MOUSE/KBD" options. For this workaround you must select "JOYSTICK" instead of "MOUSE/KBD". Once the "JOYSTICK" option is selected the bug described above is bypassed, and you will able to designate and use a pair of keyboard keys to increase and decerease your throttle.

By default, LAC players use the open square brackets key ("[") to decrease throttle and the close square brackets key ("]:) to increase throttle. You will need to hold those keys down for 1 or 2 seconds to see the resulting change in your throttle indicator.

This keyboard/throttle bug has been fixed in LAC Version 9.88, which was released for beta testing on 29Jan2026. Subsequent versions of LAC will always benefit from this fix and should no longer suffer from that bug.
