Ah, wonderful. I'm now subscribed to that list. > > - What network devices work? Can we NFS-mount a root filesystem using a > > supported NIC? > > Yep..., NE2000 clones work, PPP is functional. Great... I'm getting rid of my 3c1 CF-slot network card since I'll be getting a real CF memory card. Any recommendations on a Linux-capable network card to buy? I'd prefer 10/100, but any reasonably-priced card would do. > > - Can Linux-VR be booted and used without a CompactFlash card on devices > > with sufficient memory? > > On a workpad? Probably. But you just have to get the images over there :). So I'd make the image on a "real" machine, transfer the image and the kernel to the Workpad's real memory, then use CyaCE (or some other bootloader) to load up the new kernel with an initial ramdisk. Which wipes the kernel and image out of the WinCE memory space, so if I want to boot again, I need to transfer everything again. Or can I cold-boot into Linux without WinCE? > > I would really like to load up Linux on my IBM Workpad z50, but I'm > > hesitant to back everything up and wipe the memory for Linux if I can't > > expect to have a usable system. > > Yea, it's not there yet. I'll have to play with this in my CFT once I get a Linux-compatible network card. If things seem usable enough for non-developers to enjoy, I'll put a mini-distro and a precompiled kernel up for comsumption.
