I do see that point. However, a number of non-patchable apps use v4l1,
and *on the condition* that it's not a large effort, it *might* be a
good thing. But everyone spends their time as they wish, in any
case :-).

BTW, I am pushing the relevant vendors to get them to support v4l2.
Please, do that you too! It would also help in that process to get a
pointer to a statement that v4l1 is going away soon! Can you try to dig
it up?
