Frank - thanks for all you help and work! I successfully spoke with my Tek scope and got its identity back! BUT...(there is always a but!) if I eject the card while the interface is active (for example running ``ibtest''), my computer hangs. If I exit from ibtest first, then there is no problem. -- Here is what I did: I edited `/etc/gpib.conf' (the only change from the orig is the board_type parameter. (should any of the others be changed for a pcmcia card?) interface { minor = 0 /* minor = 0 uses /dev/gpib0, minor = 1 uses /de v/gpib1, etc. */ board_type = ines_pcmcia /* type of interface board being used */ pad = 0 /* primary adress of interface */ sad = 0 /* secondary adress of interface */ timeout = 3s /* timeout for commands */ eos = 0x0a /* EOS Byte */ set-reos yes /* Terminate read if EOS */ set-bin no /* Compare EOS 8-bit */ /* settings for boards that lack plug-n-play capability */ base = 0 /* Base io ADDRESS */ irq = 0 /* Interrupt request level */ dma = 0 /* DMA channel (zero disables) */ master yes /* interface board is system controller */ } -- I also added a script : /etc/pcmcia/linux-gpib-pcmcia, but right now it does nothing (it is called by cardmgr when an insertion or removal is seen). Should there be something in there? -- There should be some graceful way to eject the card at any time...without hanging the computer. Thanks for everything! Frank, all Now ``cardmgr'' sees the ines_pcmcia module, but I still get an error (and ibtest is still not seeing the scope): Mar 28 14:41:58 erebus cardmgr[549]: initializing socket 0 Mar 28 14:41:58 erebus cardmgr[549]: socket 0: Ines GPIB for PCMCIA Mar 28 14:41:58 erebus cardmgr[549]: executing: 'modprobe ines-gpib' Mar 28 14:41:58 erebus kernel: Linux-GPIB Driver -- Kernel Release 2.4.2-2 Mar 28 14:41:58 erebus kernel: gpib: registered ines_pci interface Mar 28 14:41:58 erebus kernel: gpib: registered ines_pcmcia interface Mar 28 14:41:58 erebus kernel: ines_cs.c 0.10 1997/07/01 19:30:58 (Claus Schroeter) Mar 28 14:42:00 erebus cardmgr[549]: get dev info on socket 0 failed: Resource temporarily unavailable Should I upgrade my kernel to a more recent one (which is a stable one?). I am using a stock Red Hat kernel - I can try and make a new minimal one with just the right things (pcmcia, for example). Thanks! Sridhar. |

Sridhar, The linux-gpib package was failing to recognize that your kernel supported PCMCIA due to it being modular instead of compiled into the kernel. Fixes in cvs. Frank On Thu, 28 Mar 2002, Sridhar Anandakrishnan wrote: > Frank, thanks for the config file for the INES pcmcia card (I should have > read the pcmcia-howto -that info is in there!!...). > > ``cardmgr'' now recognizes the card: > > Mar 28 09:47:32 erebus cardmgr[565]: initializing socket 0 > Mar 28 09:47:32 erebus7:33 erebus cardmgr[565]: executing: 'modprobe ines-gpib' > Mar 28 09:47:33 erebus kernel: Linux-GPIB Driver -- Kernel Release 2.4.2-2 > Mar 28 09:47:33 erebus kernel: gpib: registered ines_pci interface > Mar 28 09:47:34 erebus cardmgr[565]: get dev info on socket 0 failed: > Resource temporarily unavailable > > BUT, I still can't get ``ibtest'' to see my scope! > |

Frank, thanks for the config file for the INES pcmcia card (I should have read the pcmcia-howto -that info is in there!!...). ``cardmgr'' now recognizes the card: Mar 28 09:47:32 erebus cardmgr[565]: initializing socket 0 Mar 28 09:47:32 erebus7:33 erebus cardmgr[565]: executing: 'modprobe ines-gpib' Mar 28 09:47:33 erebus kernel: Linux-GPIB Driver -- Kernel Release 2.4.2-2 Mar 28 09:47:33 erebus kernel: gpib: registered ines_pci interface Mar 28 09:47:34 erebus cardmgr[565]: get dev info on socket 0 failed: Resource temporarily unavailable BUT, I still can't get ``ibtest'' to see my scope! [root@erebus linux-gpib]# ./examples/ibtest enter primary address for device [0-30]: 1 trying to open pad = 1 on /dev/gpib0 ... ibBoardFunc :[Thu Mar 28 14:46:41 2002](-)< ERR> EDVR <OS Error> -- errno=19 (No such device) failed to bring device online failed to get descriptor I notice that the driver that is loaded is ``ines_pci'' - should that be ``ines_pcmcia''? If that is the problem how do I get cardmgr to load the right thing? If that isn't the problem... ?? Thanks a lot for your time and efforts! Sridhar. |

The cvs has a new file, linux-gpib/etc/pcmcia/linux-gpib-pcmcia.conf, which you should copy to your /etc/pcmcia directory. Then if you restart your cardmgr it should recognize your card. Ah, good you're the first person to provide feedback on this board type, hopefully we will have it on the 'known to function' list very soon. The pcmcia layer needs to be given some more information, I'll try and get the necessary config files into the cvs this evening. All, (frank!), I have successfully compiled the latest linux-gpib sources (from the CVS tree). I am running a 2.4.2 kernel. I have an INES pcmcia card and a Tektronix TDS-310 scope (configured as address = 1). cardmgr version 3.1.22 When I run ``ibtest'' in the examples directory here is what I get: [root@erebus linux-gpib]# ./examples/ibtest enter primary address for device [0-30]: 1 trying to open pad = 1 on /dev/gpib0 ... ibBoardFunc :[Wed Mar 27 23:49:58 2002](-)< ERR> EDVR <OS Error> -- errno=19 (No such device) failed to bring device online failed to get descriptor (I ran as root so that there should be no permission problems on /dev/gpib). Okay, the cvs version of osinit.c should have this fixed now. Or you could just comment out the initialization of the sendpage and get_unmapped_area members of ib_fops (they were added in 2.4.4). OK, solved that problem but got a new one :( (I was not `su' before - I guess the config does stuff in the kernel tree, but because of the gui-ish interface, the errors got covered up... oops). But I now get the compilation going OK for a bit and then hanging with: <successful compilation stuff deleted...> gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.4.2/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -Wno-unused -pipe -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -march=i686 -DMODULE -DMODVERSIONS -include /usr/src/linux-2.4.2/include/linux/modversions.h -I. -I../include -I ../board/ -I../../include -DEXPORT_SYMTAB -c -o osinit.o osinit.c osinit.c:124: unknown field `sendpage' specified in initializer osinit.c:125: unknown field `get_unmapped_area_R9c286fe9' specified in initializer osinit.c:125: warning: excess elements in struct initializer osinit.c:125: warning: (near initialization for `ib_fops') make[2]: *** [osinit.o] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/sak/GPIB/linux-gpib-3.1.2/driver/sys' make[1]: *** [subdirs] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/sak/GPIB/linux-gpib-3.1.2/driver' make: *** [linux-gpib] Error 2 [root@erebus linux-gpib-3.1.2]# Any help appreciated... Then the data will be stored to disk and I will run a Tcl (with BLT) program to look at the data... The alternative is to pay Mathworks for their data acquisition toolbox for matlab and use that - and I would rather go the open source way! Thanks, Sridhar. |

Hi, I tried to run ``make'' (on kernel 2.4.2-2) and got these error message: I'm sure it is a simple misunderstanding on part on how to set up the kernel sources (which are in /usr/src/linux-2.4). For some reason the file /usr/include/linux/module.h is being seen first rather than /usr/src/linux-2.4/include/linux/module.h ... which does exist. How do I force it to look in /usr/src/linux-2.4/include first? Dear linux-gpib gurus, I have recently installed a gpib card in my PC (PCIIA). I am using the linux-gpib package, version 3.1.0. The installation went smoothly until it came to testing the card with the ibchk utility. When running this program I obtain the following: ** First checkingyour config file .... OK ** Check Errlog... OK ** Next Check The river .... OK ** Check if board present .... OK and then the program hangs prior to the testing of bus functions. If anyone could help out I would appreciate it. Cheers Iwan |

Your pcII/IIa board has switchers or jumpers for setting the base address, irq, dma channel, and whether it is in pcII or pcIIa mode. See your owner's manual (you can probably find a manual for it on NI's website). You can see what ioports/irq/dma are in use already by looking in the /proc directory. For example, 'cat /proc/ioports'. By the way, I am going to release a version 3.1.2 today which doesn't really have any changes except to turn off some debugging messages I accidentally left on for 3.1.1 so the package doesn't spam everyone's kernel logs. When it asks for a primary address, it wants the address of the device you want to talk to as opposed to the address you gave to your interface board (which I am assuming is 0). Go into the drivers subdirectory, and delete the 'board' symbolic link. Make it point to the nec7210 directory instead of cbi4882. It's a bug in the util/Setup.in script. Or, you might be better waiting until Monday and using 3.1.1 when I release it since a lot of changes have been made (I should be able to get it out over the weekend). You also have to set the board's irq and dma channel with the switches/jumpers. The PCII/IIa board also has a jumper or something to switch it between PCII mode and PCIIa mode. There is probably a manual for it somewhere no national instrument's web site. (including gpib.conf, mknod master libgpib.a) On the measurement computer i can insmod gpib-common and gpib0, but the computer has trouble "becoming active controller"! ibchk freeses directly after "Check if Board present OK" How can i check the installation? The README.PCIIA describes the two address switches on the card, what about the other switches and jumpers? Thank you Greetings Cezary |

Ray, The board uses a cb7210.2 chip, which takes up the first 8 io addresses, and for which some docs are available at http://www.measurementcomputing.com/cb7210/ It also uses a cbi488.2 chip for its high-speed mode (it doesn't need to be used for nec7210 compatibility mode), which takes up offsets 8 and 9 from the base address. I have a fax with some cbi488.2 info in it, but haven't converted it to electronic form yet. What version of the driver are you working on? I've made a lot of changes to the cvs and it might not be worth spending much time modifying the older versions. I am rolling support for all the computer boards stuff into the generic nec7210 driver, which is currently working (on and off as I make changes) with my isa pc2a board. I put some support for the computer boards PCI-GPIB but I'm not sure if that's working yet. Frank On Thu, 24 Jan 2002, Raymund Rimando wrote: > Hello Frank, > I was wondering if you could help me.
