I've got the same problem, but I think it's a matter of pppd launch string
even if I haven't managed to find out the right one yet.
I don't think it's a kernel issue either, as I'm using 2.4.9 (problems with
2.4.20 as well...).
Anyway, I can't connect with pon, wvdial, kppp, gnome dialer, *but *I can
using dialdcontrol.
Don't ask me why, but it works :)

BTW, there's a strange bug (?) in modem handling: if I launch an app such as
psi (jabber client) or opera and /then/ I try to go online, 80% of times
the whole system freezes while running pppd and I have to ctrl+/A/+/A/
