Pon is buggy??

Hi.

I still have problems going off the net with Debian3.0.
When I try pon provider, nothing happens. I did this
with the 2.4.18 kernel.

I also tried an earlier kernel(2.4.17 or something?)
and KPPP could sense that I had a modem connected
(with the 2.4.18 the whole system crashes...)
But once again, when I tried pon provider nothing
happens, so I assume that PON is buggy in Debian3.0.
Is there some other program I can use?

Btw. I have tried the 2.4.20 kernel and this kernel
won't even boot on my system.
