You should download kernel using cvs and try to compile it by yourself. Instructions how to do this are on linux-apus.sf.net, you should find there something about CVS (go to kernel part). BTW. You should have read XFree.log carefully, there's everything you want to know - look at the lines beginnig with (EE) - they indicate errors. Kernels above 2.4.13 don't boot because of a nasty bug in interrupts handling in apus, it wasn't removed but I introduced a little hack that helped A1200 users.
