i'd suggest ..if X isnt working at all....to remove it with APT
and then do the upgrades as normal (apt-get update wont
update X then as its not installed)

then install/upgrade X when you feel like it..... but tools that you mention
NEED X - thats why they're trying to update it too!

why doesnt X run? what problem are you having....we have a lot of peopel with X issues
so could you send the output of your 'startx'?

for what its worth....i've just installed Debian 3.0 on my 060/603e
BlizzardPPC/BVision and X worked almost out of the box!
