Port for standard modem?

Hi!

What is the standard port for ppp?
I have a A4000 with a 56k telix modem
connected on the standard serial port.

I assume it is ttyS0 but I'm not sure..
The pppconfig program couldn't identify
which port the modem was connected so
either the modem isn't recognized by my
Debian system OR the ppp is not compiled
into the kernel, and since loading of
modules fails, this is not an option.
