with your new CD's installed in /etc/apt/lists  (etc etc) have you done
an      "apt-get update"  ?

apt-get dist-upgrade will upgrade your distribution cores before
other stuff.


and yes, sometimes when you update, other packages get removed...its
the way of its workings

i foten boot between 2.2.10 and 2.4.x   (2.2.10 supports the
clockport serial......faster downloads/updates)

2.4.13 is my usual 'running' kernel
