Esound & /dev/dsp

Hi,
when I try to run esd I get '/dev/dsp: no such device' even if all
permissions are set properly (it gives the same output if ran as root).
I also installed alsa drivers, but had no results.
Is there a way to solve this problem (and have sound? -the beeps work fine-)
