[snip ] I don't know about the installation issues, only thing I can tell is that the glint crashing seems to be a known problem, same thing here on my box (even worse, sometimes it crashes already at login..). It may be easier to update to XFree86 4.2 if you had debian.. Oh, or, for a quick fix, when you have your old setting up and running: change partitions to ext3, so you can at least skip the fsck'ing.
