Debian Woody 3 post installation

My Woody, installation is working, but it has some minor glitches, first is 
the keyboard under X, how can I modify XF86Config-4, to make work SHIFT 
instead of ALT and the @ sign (I had to modify using xkeycaps), and the 
brackets, and braces ?

I read some post about "custom keycodes" but in my XF86Config I don't have it.

Another issue is fbdev, does the s3virge server work under apus or I have to 
live without video acceleration with a CV643d ?

And finally is there a way to login as root instead of a user when entering 
init 2 mode ?
