And that's what I did.
A brand-new install, with just the necessary packages, and not a bit more.
Now kppp crashes after the first run and then gives a segmentation fault
whenever I try to run it within the same session.
I configured wvdial and gave it a try (maybe the best dialing tool after
Miami...), everything works fine until pppd dies with error 16 (modem
hangup, if I'm not wrong).

I really really really do not know what to do (and I'm getting tired of it).
I'll love any suggestion, apart from "change OS"... :)

PS: If it can be a hint, freeciv client can't connect to localhost saying
"Network unreachable"
