Just the same settings that worked under 1999 Q3 (esound output). Anyway, it seems to be related to gtk apps, as sometimes the modem switch= es on when I click "Ok" on gnome requesters or when I tried to play freeciv = (I was connecting to localhost) >=20 >> Moreover, when I launch KDE after loading the window manager a message >> appears telling something about a cpu overload problem dealing with th= e >> sound server. >=20 > AFAIK this particular problem is a known artsd breakage. er... what does it mean? >=20 >> I can't connect to the internet either. >> GKDial connects but drops the line as soon as authentication ends, kpp= p >> can't access /dev/ttyS0 from users even if all the permissions and gro= up >> are set correctly (I'm in dip, >> dialout etc...). >> When I run kppp as root, it finds the modem, connects, but then pppd d= ies >> (also after I chmoded it) telling that it can't find ppp (but the alia= ses >> seem right). >=20 > Can you run pppd with the debug option and look at the debug output in > the syslog? Yesterday I succeeded in reading some pppd debug output in kppp log windo= w, but today it does not work anymore. However it just said "Sorry, can't he= lp you" and showed that it hanged up when trying to connect to ppp0. What can be interesting is the output I get from a shell when I launch kp= pp. debian:~# kppp Kernel supports ppp alright. Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device pppd: The remote system is required to authenticate itself pppd: but I couldn't find any suitable secret (password) for it to use to= do so.pppd: (None of the available passwords would let it use an IP address.= ) Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device It really looks like it can't find ppp0... ;) I won't post the aliases list again, but the settings are alias ppp0 ppp alias ppp1 ppp Last but not least, is there a way to shutdown the system other than open= ing a shell and typing shutdown -r now? The logout function in Gnome does not show the Reboot and Shutdown option= s even if linuxconf settings and shutdown permissions are ok. Bye Michele |
