ah..the RPM trap.  yes, you CAN get out of it. the easiest way is to
find the very next version of RPM and install that...it will require some
new packages though!!  once you get RPM v4 installed you'll then be able to
install the newer stuff...though you WILL also require the latest glibc
and getting RPM to lever THAT onto the system can be a nightmare
