Compiling a new kernel

I'm trying to compile a new APUS PPC kernel, to optimize it for my system=
=2E but I'm sure about what to do in the case of APUS, what can be left a=
nd what should be compiled.

i.e Get the latest kernel tar.gz ?? , then apply which apus diff ??? How =
should I apply it ??

After that what ?

I'm a newbie in that subject (never did it before)
