If you use the command :
tar -cvzf toto.tar /etc
it will be very difficult to "untar" in another place, I would advise you
to "tar" with :
cd /etc
tar -cvzf /tmp/toto.tar ./*
After that it is possible to "untar" your files in another place with the
command :
mkdir /anotherplace
cd /anotherplace
tar -xvzf /tmp/toto.tar
All your files will be in "/anotherplace" and you can examine all of them
and copy or move any of them in the original place.
