argh! the pain of not having a Debian x86 box around. I have redhat, 
freebsd (now that would be interesting).  I guess 'toolchain' is the
main clue here. handy for me to work on this anyway as i think there'll be
some Sharp Zaurus code I need to be working on anyway (and that needs
a cross-compiler working too!)
