self-compile 2.4.17 still fails

hi,

I took a fresh CVS of the 2.4 tree of the APUS project (hoping
that my self compiles failed because of some weirdness)

I used the plain config (ie the same as the 2.4.17 on the APUS site)

bootstrap loads, the machine freezes (as it does) but kernel console
never appears....
