Yes, you should be able to compile kernels everywhere.
I compile PPC kernels on the ia32-notebook from work (fast) and on my CHRP
(slower).
I compile m68k kernels on the ia32-notebook from work (fast) and (very rare) on
my Amiga (very slow).
Ok, that's cross-compiling, but compiling for a different system with the same
arch should work, too.
Can you post the error message from make.
