I switched from ReiserFS to XFS on this PowerBook a while ago (the curious can read up the reasons in the debian-powerpc archives) and was rewarded by a significant increase in performance. I'm using the snapshot patches from ftp://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/download/patches/.
