Here it can't get anywhere near establishing PPP. It usually fails after
the first modem initialization commands because it usually doesn't get
"OK" but " K" or "O ". With a serial cable pppd timeouts with the
negotiation. I also tried turning off the IDE drive with hdparm but it
didn't have any noticeable effect except that the IDE drive got turned
off...
