what version of binutils?

What version of binutils do most of you folks use?

I have tried several versions from 
ftp.varesearch.com/pub/hjl/binutils that I've compiled natively  on my
machine and they all have had varions problems; giving  messages like
invalid assembler instructions or syntax.  I am using gcc-2.95.2 as well
(also compiled on my machine.).  The majority of the time all things I've
compiled work fine (even kernels AFAICT).

Is there a certain version of binutils/gcc that I should be 
using for best results?
