Hello, I tried to install the 4.0 distribution, after running for a lot of time the 3.9 with no problems... but it refuses to go. From the root dir I extracted the tar with -C / as I did for the previous versions, installing the lib, srv and glx ones. But, also with the new XF86Config, I have this module error... I attach the log. Where's the problem? Regards, -- Giorgio Signori of Softwave Development \ -> http://www.yure.go.to \ Amiga.it -Italian Amiga&LinuxPPC magazine\ -> http://www.skylink.it/ear\ |

Hi, I am running Debian 2.2r3 and am needing to upgrade from Xfree 3 to Xfree 4. I have checked out the Debian Website with no luck. The APUS website is supposed to have what I need, but I am under the impression I need a .deb file, compatible with debian. Is there such a .deb file or do I need to go about this in a different manner. Also, using Debian , should I upgrade the Kernal to 2.4? (and again is there a specific Debian Kernal that I need. When I have asked questions before I often get pointed in the direction of some FAQ's but then seem unable to find them. Should I be using my browser or a NewsReader ie NewsRog?If anyone can give me the exact source of these FAQ's I would be grateful. Yours faithfully Dave |

If you downloaded your debian install, then just edit your /etc/apt/sources.list and change the word "stable" to "testing". Now do an apt-get update followed by apt-get install xserver-xfree86. It will install the new XFree86 4.x for you, along with a load of other files. It's about a 21MB download. ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hello, I have a working Debian system but currently run XFree 3. I am in the process of a very large upgrade download, but what I mainly want is to get XFree upgraded to version 4. Can I do this BEFORE doing an apt-get dist-upgrade without causing problems. (I have done an apt-get update to get the latest package details) If so what is the exact line I need to type using apt, is it? apt-get install task-x-window-system-core xserver-xfree86 -d Regards, Dave ( jo...@co... ) Some people hope to achieve immortality through their works or their children. Hi Michel, Thanks for the help but I am still not clear > I have a working Debian system but currently run XFree 3. I want to > get XFree upgraded to version 4. On 19-Apr-02, you wrote: #>Just apt-get install xserver-xfree86, but it will likely upgrade a# #>lot of other stuff due to dependencies.# When I try the upgrade I am told that a lot of packages will be REMOVED (eg. Abiword, Gimp, Mozilla, all my gnome stuff and lots of other smaller packages) Is this necessary? If so why, and is it just a matter of reinstalling from cd later, and then updating them online. I have a slow online connection and so don't want to waste time and energy with unnecessary downloads. Regards, Dave ( jo...@co... ) You cannot kill time without injuring eternity. -- Thoreau |

Or is it not as simple as this. 4.What I don't want to do is upgrade XFree and then find all the software I regularly use won't work without masses of time online downloading upgrades. 5.Any help with simplifying this process would be great. 6.If I completed my current "apt-get dist-upgrade" (145mb) and then attempted the XFree upgrade would packages not need to be deleted. No, this is not possible, since the ftp.linux.org kernel lacks lot of stuff needed for apus, in particular the amiga/m68k stuff and all the specific apus stuff. Please use the 2.2.10 kernel available at linux-apus.sourceforge.net Friendly, Sven LUTHER |
