Not if you're using X 4.x . It doesn't work better yet there because the Xkb
extension doesn't work right. One way to solve it would be to get support for
the new input layer, still no takers?

AFAIK the kernel version shouldn't matter too much, the code you'd deal with
is in a separate CVS repository at sourceforge.
