AFAIK, kernel code shouldn't contain floating point code to reduce the
overhead for context switches etc. . arch/ppc/Makefile sets -msoft-float for
that, have you been playing with it?

Ahhh, I see, you mean playing with the flag, No. 

The message appears when the kernel is compiled with egcs or gcc but only
after an X crash - what does this suggest ?
