Hi! I found oops in driver/rtc that hangs apus whenever I try to run command cat /proc/rtc. I also get it when I enable /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh script in woody 3.0. I tried to find it and I deduced that it must be CMOS_READ and CMOS_WRITE macros. Is rtc totally broken in 2.2.10 ??? I downloaded kernel from cvs branch 2.2. BTW. When development of 2.2.x kernel line for amiga stopped ? Regards Krystian Baclawski |

Hi! > At least one or two years ago... I assume you're looking at 2.2 because > you have problems with 2.4; I advise you to work on those problems > instead of wasting time with 2.2. Yes I think you're right. But there is a big problem, I cannot even start linux with kernel 2.4 on my amiga. It hangs up after ide setup, and I have no idea why because some people reported it to work on a simple gayle without a problem (of course there are other people that cannot make it working - exactly like me). The other problem is that I'm beginner I don't know kernel much. I've just started going deeper than "make menuconfig" and if I didn't have Fastata that is unsupported, I would never try going deeper (despite of being Computer Science student). I hope to find someone more experienced who would give me basic knowledge of linux-apus kernel. Regards Krystian Baclawski |

I propose to ask user: * what turbocard do they have (blizzardppc/cyberstormppc) * what version of mainboard do they have (me A1200 rev.2B) * what version of kernel they tried to make working * whether kernel starts, waits for about 10-20 seconds, or doesn't work completely * ... Yes, I understand you. There're two ways for users, the first one : let
linux-apus die from lack of programmers/users developing it, or somehow
help apus community. I'm from the first group, I hope there are also other
people that would do something for apus. I also realize that my words
sound hmm... as if I were an idealist, but what would have been linux
without people willing to develop it...

Frankly, I'm quite disorientated, we have been talking about a poll for
two days. I think it's enough time to make a poll and start gathering
information about the problem.

Uhh. It's the worst thing. I hope somebody will fix those problems till
apus dies. Users have been suffering from ide-driver problem since release
of 2.4.14 kernel.

How many subscribed users do our mailing-lists have ? Maybe more general
poll should be done ? What information do we really need ???

Exactly what I am asking for! It's diffccult to estimate the significance of
the answeres gahtered by a poll, and secondly, it's maybe even more difficult
to ask the right questions. If a poll is done, I think it should be an
exception to the rule (say, we shouldn't have a new poll every other day,
because we realized that the polled information is incomplete), therefore it should be a
very meaningful questionary. To increase significance, the poll could e.g. be
made public by the usual amiga news services, and so on.
Well, I am not a developer, but with my little amount of time, I could at
least help produce some useful debugging output concerning the glint problem.
But, I agree with you, as you have been writing in an other post, that maybe
first the ide problem should be tackled, and just on second position, the
glint problem. Bu this doesn't inhibt us on asking about both problems on the
same questionary.
It may be useful if some of the senior developers here could give some advice,
what information really should be asked for, e.g. revision of this and this
file, or hardware stuff. It's not very productive to ask people questions about
their setup, without really knowing which questions really provide the
important information!
Just my .2 p's..
And please keep in mind, this post isn't ment offensive at all!! It only
represents my thoughts trying to help to find out of this quite dodgy
situation.

hi, I'n not too concerned about the last_ipl printk's right now...as some other people see them and their system still boots (and operates) some info about what it means might be nice...i know its some debugging. anyway...just too make sure that this wasnt just some changes to the kernel that made slightly dodgy hardware finally die I played with my configuration yesterday....for about 2 hours until I was too tired. heres my findings: 2.4.13 boots with IDEDOUBLER installed. with ide=doubler present and absent in bootstrap line (i just lose my 2nd HD and CD) 2.4.18 doesnt boot with IDEDOUBLER present and ide=doubler 2.4.18 doesnt boot with IDEDOUBLER present and no ide=doubler 2.4.18 doesnt boot with IDEDOUBLER removed from system (ie plain A1200 interface) so....its not hardware...and its not the ide=doubler code (so far as i could tell) It *APPEARS* that the system hangs in ide-probe.c this is a quick statement...i didnt have too much time to delve into the path this code takes (system reboots and kernel compiles take some time). there are a few things I'm concerned about 1) IDEBUSSPEED. this seems to want to run a 33MHz. is this okay for gayle ?? The A1200 motherboard only runs at 14.x/28.x ?? I tried with idebus=14 etc etc but ide-probe still came up with 33 - i guess bootstrap doesnt pass this argument along? 2) delays. do we use the mdelay(); calls in IDE system...or do we use the HZ/20 calls. 3) if this *IS* to do with IRQ and address space allocation (as it appears to be leaning towards) what has changed? oeverything prior to 2.4.14 worked.... i dont have a 2.4.13 source code tarball anymore (dumped my old CD's too....no backups there!) I'd love it if someone had such a tarball I could FTP as then I could start 'diffing' the files in drivers/ide to see what happened....... Alan |

Hi,

This was a major surgery, I hoped everything still works as before,
please test it carefully.
Biggest visible difference is a new /proc/interrupts format, which is
now the same as for other ppc machines. Otherwise there is now finally
that annoying "Trying to enable auto-vector" print gone. I left another
print in (last_ipl[x] already set to...), it should only occur rarely
and shouldn't be a problem. I'll remove it later again.

It's some interrupt event history (positive number for interrupt entry, negative for exit). It's printed when it sees unexpected interrupts. The basic problem is a buggy interrupt controller, which generates interrupt when it shouldn't. The new interrupt code ignores these interrupts. It's not completely clear why it crashes and without hardware I cannot debug this. The problem is that this requires some careful adding of prints and lots of reboots, since too much prints will modify the behaviour and magically "fix" the problem. bye, Roman |

I wonder if it may have something to do with the different ppc firmware revisions. May it be that the newer kernels somehow dislike newer versions of the flashrom on cyberstorm and blizzard cards, and therefore crash on those machines, but work on older ones (like mine or yours) or vice versa? IIRC there have lately (year 2001) been some new updates floating around to support pci bridging boards. Maybe we should have asked about the firmware revision in the poll. > The new interrupt code ignores these interrupts. Hi!

Could you give me those rights, I'll also make a poll about FastAta
(PowerFlyer), I'm especially interested how many people do have FastATA,
and which model. I also want to know who should I give drivers for
testing..
In my opinion poll about ide/ipl problem should look like this:
* Amiga model : A1200/A4000
* Board revision : for instance : rev2b ...
* PPC Card Model : for instance : Blizzard 603e/175/68040/40
* Kernel used : 2.4.x
* Suffer from ipl/ide problem : Yes/No
* Strange behaviour : description for instance : waits for
about 20s after that continues booting
* Remarks : kernel is showing last ipl also when ....
* Email : ...
What do you think about such a poll ??? I hope we won't discuss this
problem more that it is necessary.
I really want to get 2.4.x kernel working on my amiga, then I'll be
able to start writing driver.

IIRC the sf.net poll system isnt that 'advanced' - its just a case of each question being able to have stock seection of answers... (which are programmable) but no remark fields or email entering fields etc. the idea of a PHP program to collect the data is the most interesting method to collect such information. I would possibly get a PowerFlyer if it had proper support. been holding off. > I really want to get 2.4.x kernel working on my amiga, then I'll be > able to start writing driver. me too... i need to have a working kernel so that I can start playing with things that no longer work... eg some serial hardware. and then maybe even take up that Mediator PCI challenge..or start on it. but my kernel source code compiles...but I cant use that kernel (and stupidly I now longer have a 2.4.13 tree :-( ) alan |
