Bugs item #862748, was opened at 2003-12-19 09:19 Message generated for change (Comment added) made by sonic_amiga You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=105907&aid=862748&group_id=5907 Category: 2.2 Kernel Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Pavel Fedin (sonic_amiga) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: ATAPI ZIP drive does not work Initial Comment: When i try to mount my ZIP drive system says that "Driver is not configured". When i looked into modules directory i noticed that ide_floppy module is absent. But when kernel starts up it sees me drive and identifies it. Why is ide_floppy module lost? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Pavel Fedin (sonic_amiga) Date: 2003-12-19 18:45 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=811665 The kernel is downloaded from SourceForge. File name is 2.2. 10-000927.tgz. Thank you for telling me about config file. There i found: # CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEFLOPPY is not set So the module is really absent. Well, after some time (when i copy Debian distribution from my friend) i'll have to recompile the kernel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Alan buxey (alanbuxey) Date: 2003-12-19 12:48 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=34303 is this a selfbuilt kernel or a plain downloaded one? Could you send me your .config file for the kernel? Most likely there is no module because it is built-in, rather than built as a module - especially if its detected on startup! remember that ZIP disks have strange partition tables /dev/hdd4 might be the beast you want. BUT! i'd advise reading some more on these drives...and AVOID the ide-floppy method. use the ide-scsi instead. you can then put hdd=ide-scsi on your bootstrap line. read more at: http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue28/lg_tips28.html#atapi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Alan buxey (alanbuxey) Date: 2003-12-19 12:48 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=34303 is this a selfbuilt kernel or a plain downloaded one? Anyone a idea whats wrong? I have a very early Cyberstorm-ppc board with an 060 and PPC604@200. Maybe I have to flash the rom? The installation of the ppc libs could also be messed up or too old since they are probably just as old as the board. The bootstrap and kernel are latest cvs releases. Hello everyone. I did make an NMU of parted 1.6.6-1.1 including the amiga partitioning support some time ago, but i am preparing a new version of it, 1.6.6-1.2 with enhanced amiga partitioning support (well an endianess fix for x86 among other bugfixes), as well as probe support for all kind of amiga filesystems (FFS 0 to 7, MuFS 0 to 5, SFS, PFS 1 & 2). I would like another round of testing to be done with this one, before i make a new NMU of parted and (hopefully) it gets included upstream. Well, i duplicated the partition table reading code in the filesystem code, this should make upstream happy. For those of you wanting to recompile parted for m68k, be aware of a bug in the linux-kernel-headers of the new glibc which makes it fail to build. Workaround is to declare __invalid_size_argument_for_IOC as unsigned int, or to use an older version of glibc. See bug #219940 for details. Anyway, i386 and powerpc binaries as well as sources are available on : deb http://people.debian.org/~luther/parted/i386 deb http://people.debian.org/~luther/parted/powerpc deb-src http://people.debian.org/~luther/parted/source I would gladly add m68k binaries there also if someone forward them to me. Notice : these packages should be fairly ok, since i did a full reinstall of my system, partitioning the disk on my x86 box before creating a affs filesystem with Roman's mkaffs tool, copying the install stuff to the disk, and then putting it in my pegasos and launch the install kernel from OF. Hi, i am new to here.Yesterday, i compiled the 2.4.22 kernel and now, the Permedia2 (via glint driver) works fine under X. But there is another pb which makes the Permedia2 unusable:each time i return to the console from KDE (when i push ctr+alf+fn,quit kde or shutdown the system), the amiga freeze. So, when launching X with the glint driver, it is impossible to halt the system properly ! Is there a way to solve this problem ? Willy. |

I'm sure there are a lot more differences between the 8xx and 720/770. No= t=20 only the registers or register names but also the bits inside some=20 registers are slightly different. I have some PDF's on which the differences between the chips are=20 described. It seems that these docs are not available anymore on the LSI=20 site. I'll send it directly to you, because the size is to much for the=20 list. I hope this will help you. I have looked into the driver a little bit last weekend and I guess it=20 should be possible to provide a 770 definition into the driver. But first= =20 I have to got a workable 2.6 kernel... All those busses conform to the HP IO ADC and thus could be considered the same type of bus. Except for LASI, the above makes sense to me. LASI isn't a bus. This would be a candidate for "platform device" since it's bridge-like device with integrate sub-devices. EISA bridge chips might be a similar case. > I was just wondering if it wouldn't make more sense now for us to be > using platform devices too... I don't understand "platform devices" vs "PCI devices" unless we are talking about "custom", arch specific bridge chips. A GSC device is a GSC device regardless of which board it's soldered to. That's not the case for PCI? grant |

Yes, I was just musing about the way we did it. In theory, the difference between a "platform" device and a generic device is that a generic device has a bus, and a platform one doesn't. The platform_device also has a resource pointer and a few other bits and pieces the generic device doesn't. What I did for PA was to create a parisc bus type, and attach all the inventoried hardware to it. This blurs the bus distinction in generic device because we have several inventoried buses: Runway, GSC, LASI etc. that are all lumped under the parisc bus. I was just wondering if it wouldn't make more sense now for us to be using platform devices too... Yes, they're both working fine. I went over the 770 register definitions the other night and only found one difference between the names of the definitions in the sym53c8xx_defs file and the 770 PDF and that was: -/*3a*/ u_char nc_sbr; +/*3a*/ u_char nc_sbr; /* dwt on 720 */ This is the DMA watchdog timer, but it's not actually used by the driver. It's a `scratch byte register' on the 895. Some of the `reserved' fields in the 770 register definition have names, but they were only ever touched if the chip was a sufficiently recent revision. BTW, I couldn't see a document for the 720 chip on the LSI site -- only the 710 and 770. I presume I won't go far wrong treating them the same. > > - Someone implements the non-coherent DMA interfaces for PowerPC. > > So, maybe I can do that at least for APUS, because some of the needed > interfaces I already created as a "dirty-hack" inside the 53c770 driver. > But the mean problem is, that there is no working 2.6 kernel for APUS... > The other problem is time, but maybe I find some hours on weekend... Yeah, no hurry. I don't think we have to get this done before 2.6.0 is out -- after all, it's only a driver. -- "It's not Hollywood.
