Jack, It is embarrassing to provide the same pat answer twice in a row to what are clearly well thought out defect reports, but I must do so. The behavior you describe is entirely by design in lily because of how the permissions structure operates. If I am going to take a public discussion private, then it is crucial for me to be able to note those users who should retain access during that transition. The mechanism for that is to permit users explicitly to the discussion. Again, though you could argue this issue at length lily operates this way by virtue of its design. Deven Corzine, in Phoenix, chose a different approach, and his mechanism is very much like what you describe.
