Are there any other ways to make= =20 > sound work? It all depends on how your sound is set up on your box. Use play (from sox package) if you don't use a sound daemon, such as esound or artsd. If you're using KDE, it's most likely you're with artsd, if you use GNOME, then go for esound. For artsd, use artsplay. For esound, use esdplay. I've tested both, and they work finely.
