There has to be SOME kind of configuration going on.  If nothing else, 
someone has to tell the UART what baud/parity/stop/start configuration 
to use.  My guess is there are some vendor commands being sent during 
startup that you've missed.  Sadly, FTDI (to my knowledge) does not 
expose their command protocol.
