Very dependent on legal jurisdiction, but my impression of the legal situation in the USA is that such things are unresolved. First sale doctrine says it's legal, but that hasn't stopped some companies attempting to restrict it in their licensing conditions (i.e. Autodesk), and sometimes succeeding in their attempts at prosecution.
