Is there a choice in Linux and OS-X?  If so, I have one concern:  while it
should have been done this way from the beginning for the very same reason,
now that it's not, will it still work with existing software?  I don't know.

Either way, proceed as you wish, and we can always submit a patch on top to
fix it to whatever's decided here on the list...
