Every device I run mtp-detect on comes up with the same error. All work fine on other MTP-utilising systems (Windows, Mac). Those that have the option are set to MTP mode. What does this error mean?
usually that the permissions are not set, as we need to record these for every device.

if you see error 6it means "busy", as in "in use by other pogram" libmtp 1.1.18 reports that better.
