I have seen something vaguely similar on my GN ICS 4.1.1. Sometimes
files get indexed into the phone's media database with the wrong
content-type. The result is a file listing with the correct file size,
but when I try to copy it from either Windows or libmtp, the transfer
fails at start. So not exactly the same issue as yours but possibly
also related to database out of sync with the filesystem.

I haven't even found a reliable way to regenerate the media DB, but
luckily it's only happened to me a handful of times and on a small set
of files (photos).
