Some MTP devices have a nasty habit of connecting, disconnecting, than reconnecting again. For example, mine does this on device reboot (which a need to perform rather often). After second or third reconnect it works fine, but each time I have to close annoying popups "Unable to open MTP device '[usb:XXX,YYY]'".

The issue is discussed here.

Maybe it's worth suppressing the error if the device in question is not present anymore?

I'm using Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon, if that matters.

these come from a huigherlevel framework i think. not fgrom libmtp. and are probably hidden in those layers

Well, in the logs there is "LIBMTP PANIC: Could not init USB on second attempt" (see my first link), it looks like libmtp fails and this error is propagated to the higher levels. Are you sure this is not so?
